New Souls, Old Tolls

As dawn broke over the cliffs, Fe and Crezzida kept watch while the rest of the party slept. In the distance, Fe spotted Kailyn sitting alone at the cliff's edge, gazing out at the ocean where dolphins broke the surface. When Fe approached and asked if she was alright, Kailyn hesitated before revealing that she needed to leave the group. She spoke of unfinished business in Vainlake, her voice heavy with emotion as she explained that she had to go alone. Despite Fe's attempts to persuade her to stay, Kailyn remained resolute, stating that "goodbyes only cause pain." The two shared a warm embrace before Kailyn walked away down the road, trying to hide the tears in her eyes. Fe returned to Crezzida, and together they watched the sunrise, both understanding the weight of Kailyn's departure.

The party continued their journey toward Serpanaise, a small swampy town built on stilts at the edge of the Destitute Lands. The day was scorching hot as they rode their horses through the humid landscape, eventually arriving at the quiet settlement. The residents watched them warily as they entered, their eyes following the strangers through muddy streets. In the town square, Bones wandered into a claustrophobic magic shop run by a half-elf manager and his dragonborn assistant. The shopkeeper sold Bones what he claimed was a potion to speak with the dead, though it was nothing more than glittered water. When the rest of the party arrived and exposed the fraud, tensions rose. The dragonborn assistant, who called himself Cumin, had a panic attack that somehow caused the shop's upper level to burst into flames. The manager fired Cumin on the spot, giving him his final paycheck before fleeing. The dragonborn revealed his true name was Cyrran, and after learning of the party's quest to find Yomidrogo and uncover the truth behind the terrorist attack at Easthills, he agreed to join them.

The party visited a small graveyard where Bones attempted to dig up a grave to test his fake potion, but Fe intervened, explaining the disrespect such an act would cause. They then purchased a map of the continent from a vendor in the town square, who also directed them to a reclusive man named Garrick who might know about a dangerous beast lurking in the nearby forest. The party learned from a newspaper that fears of a Veurim invasion were growing, and that the mayor of Easthills had mysteriously disappeared. With this information in hand, they set out toward Garrick's house, leaving their horses at a stable and venturing into the eerie, silent forest.

The forest was unnaturally quiet, devoid of any animal sounds beyond the occasional insect. As they walked, Bones suddenly felt vines wrapping around his legs, pulling him down into what appeared to be quicksand. The ground beneath him opened into a massive sinkhole, and a monstrous carnivorous plant emerged, its bulbous mouth attempting to swallow Bones and his jackal companion, Muscle. Fe quickly used her magic carpet to help rescue them, while the party fought back against the creature. Bones managed to convince the plant to release them, and Fe threw a lit torch into its mouth, causing it to burst into flames and shrivel away. The party descended into the sinkhole afterward, finding only bones and a few gold pieces at the bottom, confirming that the plant was a natural, if terrifying, predator.

Continuing through the forest, the party encountered a green haze filled with small, jellyfish-like creatures that made breathing nearly impossible. Cyrran attempted to run through the haze but suffered greatly from the poison, while Nillituh, immune to such toxins, walked through unharmed. The rest of the party flew over the hazardous area using their magic carpet and broom. Eventually, they reached Garrick's unique treehouse, a structure built high in the canopy with bridges and spires. After disarming a tripwire on the staircase, they knocked on the heavily locked door. Garrick, a large bird-like humanoid, answered and explained that he had once tried to hunt the beast himself but had been gravely injured. He directed them to a nearby cave where an ancient, barbed weapon was said to be hidden—one that could defeat the creature. The party decided to rest at Garrick's house before venturing to the cave.

During their rest, the party shared stories and secrets around the fire. Cyrran spoke of his past working for a scummy employer and his deep distrust of magic. Cumin revealed that he heard voices in his head, including one named Sol, and that he experienced blackouts when stressed. Fe, curious about the truth, used her magic to compel honesty from the group, though Bones and Crezzida managed to withhold certain secrets despite the spell's influence. When the spell faded, the party decided to head to the cave at midnight, hoping to retrieve the weapon and confront the beast.

As they approached the cave entrance in the dead of night, the forest grew even more oppressive. Muscle, Bones' jackal, became agitated, and Nillituh heard a voice whisper "Danger" into her mind. Suddenly, the party was ambushed by ghastly spirits and their summoned undead minions. The spirits attempted to drain the life force from Bones and Nillituh, but the party fought back fiercely. Cumin summoned a massive ogre to aid them, while Fe unleashed a wave of thunderous force that pushed back the spirits and destroyed one of the undead creatures. Bones called down a beam of pale moonlight that burned the spirits, and Nillituh exhaled a freezing breath that damaged multiple enemies. In the final moments of the battle, Fe delivered a devastating blow to the last spirit, causing its head to explode in a burst of blackened veins. With the spirits defeated, the party stood at the mouth of the cave, ready to venture inside and claim the legendary weapon that awaited them.
