Moradin
Moradin is the god of land and creation, occupying a position of fundamental importance in both the Uinheit and Mahanity religious traditions. In Uinheit, he is one of five deities of the inner group — the most powerful tier of the pantheon, whose members oversee the most fundamental concerns of existence and almost never interact directly with mortals. In Mahanity, his status is far greater: he is the supreme and ultimate creator of all things, the originator and sustainer of existence itself, with all other gods arranged in a hierarchy beneath him.
Together with Melora, Moradin is the parent of the three divine Children — the Child of the Seas, the Child of the Mountains, and the Child of All Life — who, in Uinheit teaching, shaped the lands of Canaan. The same teaching holds that their making cost both Moradin and Melora the ability to ever directly touch the lands of Canaan again. Moradin is one of the four formally endorsed gods of the Zilaphelian Kingdom, alongside Bane, Tyr, and Erathis.
Both Uinheit and Mahanity descend from an older religious tradition called Mahn, and the theological divergence between the two faiths is most clearly visible in their differing treatment of Moradin's status — whether he is one among equals or the supreme creator above all.
Role in Uinheit
In Uinheit cosmology, Moradin is a member of the inner group, alongside Corellon, Ioun, Melora, and the Raven Queen. These five deities oversee the most fundamental concerns of existence. They almost never interact directly with mortals, devoting their attention entirely to protecting the world from corruption and preventing a repetition of the Millenia of Darkness.
Moradin's domain within the inner group is land and creation — the physical substance of the world and the act of bringing things into being. His role is complementary to Melora's domain of wilderness, the sea, and renewal: together they represent the totality of the natural world's foundation, the solid and the fluid, the made and the renewed.
The children of Melora and Moradin — the Child of the Seas, the Child of the Mountains, and the Child of All Life — are venerated alongside their parents in inner-group devotion. These Children are understood as the principal shapers of Canaan's physical features, and the balance among them is the foundation of the world's natural stability.
Role in Mahanity
In Mahanity, Moradin is not merely one of the great gods but the supreme and ultimate creator of all things. This is the defining theological claim of the Mahanity tradition: Moradin stands above all other divine beings as the originator and sustainer of existence. All other deities exist within the order that Moradin created rather than alongside him as co-equals. This gives Mahanity a monotheistic quality, even though the faith is in practice polytheistic and involves the worship of many gods.
Some higher deities — notably Melora and the Raven Queen — are granted elevated status within Mahanity compared to many others, but even these do not challenge Moradin's supremacy. The distinction between Mahanity's hierarchical theology and Uinheit's more balanced, multi-deity structure is the primary theological difference between the two traditions, both of which descend from the ancient faith of Mahn.
A smaller tradition within Mahanity, the Creed of Mahanity, holds Tyr equal in status to Moradin — making divine justice as fundamental as divine creation. This is a significant theological departure from mainstream Mahanity and is practiced primarily among the religious and social elite of the central Zilaphelian Kingdom.
The Act of Creation
Uinheit teaching holds that Moradin and Melora gave so much of themselves in making their three Children, who shaped the seas, mountains and living world of Canaan, that neither can ever again directly touch the land. The belief is set out more fully under Melora.
Worship in the Zilaphelian Kingdom
In the Zilaphelian Kingdom, where Mahanity is the dominant religion, Moradin is one of four formally endorsed gods whose public worship is sanctioned:
| Deity | Domain |
|---|---|
| Moradin | Land and creation; supreme creator |
| Bane | War and conquest |
| Tyr | Justice |
| Erathis | Civilisation and invention |
All other gods within the Zilaphelian Kingdom are formally banned from public religious endorsement, though in practice most banned gods do not carry legal penalties for private worship.
