Session 21, Arc III

Finding Faith

Played 12 July 2025 Watch the session

The party discovered the corpse of a dark elf woman lying face down in the wilderness during their journey through stormy weather. She wore dark, ornate clothing with spike points and thick boots, and investigation revealed the body had been looted with gash wounds on her face. Cyrran found a mysterious coin-shaped object with shifting colors that felt magical but wasn't actually enchanted. After stripping the body for sellable items and feeding the remains to their bird companion Campbell, they continued traveling through the storm.

As they pressed on through the rain and harsh conditions, Cyrran spotted a glint of sunlight on the horizon through a break in the storm clouds. The party saw a hole in the clouds about fifteen to twenty kilometers away and decided to head toward it, confirming they were still traveling in the right direction toward Arakcadia. After hours of walking, they reached what appeared to be an oasis with palm trees, a pond, and grass, where the air became noticeably hotter like a desert environment.

The oasis proved to be a magical phenomenon with clear skies surrounded by storm clouds. Yomidrogo and Bones decided to explore while the others rested after more than ten hours of travel. Yomidrogo detected strong illusion and conjuration magic throughout the area and discovered ancient buried structures, stone arches, and overgrown columns. When he cast dispel magic at third level and rolled a natural twenty, he successfully dispelled a ninth-level illusion spell in a hundred-foot radius, revealing the true environment of rain, wind, and fallen structures without the false vegetation.

The party began hearing mysterious whispers and voices speaking in ancient languages around the oasis. Cyrran recognized some phrases in Latixian and Zilaphelian, with the voices asking questions like "do you belong here?" and warning "turn back strangers lest our fate become yours." Bones noticed that birds and insects only appeared within the oasis boundaries, but when he attempted to cast speak with animals, the magic didn't take hold. He successfully dispelled an illusory bird with eldritch blast, causing it to dissipate with its sounds floating away as whispers on the wind.

Yomidrogo used his awakened mind ability to telepathically communicate with trapped spirits in the oasis. The spirits revealed they were starving in the sun, abandoned by their gods, and desperately pleading for water. When Kailyn created water using magic, the spirits immediately disappeared upon contact, suggesting they were cursed to never touch water again. A spirit bird appeared and led the party deeper into the oasis as sunrise approached, warning them to follow before it was too late.

The bird led them about one hundred meters to another rune on a palm tree before disappearing as sunlight hit the area. The party found a pillar with an inscription that posed a riddle: "I dance on the horizon, yet vanish at your feet. The hotter the day grows, the surer our chance to meet. A promise of refuge no hands can ever hold. Speak now my name or be lost in deserts old." After various attempts with words like "shadow" and "hallucination," Bones successfully solved the riddle by saying "mirage," causing the script to glow and transform.

A portal opened, and the party decided to enter it, bringing their animal companions along after Kailyn used speak with animals to convince them. They emerged in a courtyard with four small pillars and one large central pillar, each inscribed with runes representing different schools of magic. The party systematically cast spells on each pillar - firebolt and mage hand on conjuration and evocation, minor illusion on the illusion pillar, and sleep on the enchantment pillar. When all four pillars were activated, they connected and lit up the central pillar, which revealed an inscription about "when the scorching eye meets the hidden star, the path shall open."

Working together, the party rotated a star-shaped stone block to align with sunlight, which reflected and hit the central pillar, causing it to split in half and reveal a staircase. They descended into a narrow underground passageway that became a confusing maze with impossible geometry. The maze defied normal physics - turning four right corners didn't lead back to the starting point, and the party couldn't find their way back to the entrance. Bones used mold earth to create holes in walls, discovering darkness and deep drops beyond the stone.

In the maze, the party heard mysterious voices speaking in various languages, with some asking cryptic questions and making unclear statements. The voices seemed to come from different entities or spirits, but attempts to communicate received no clear responses. Suddenly, a nightmarish minotaur-like creature called a Nightvale Spectre appeared, wielding a scythe and having the ability to phase through people. The creature attacked Arri and used its scythe to force Kailyn to forget a precious memory - she chose to erase her memory of Caleb and the marble basin attack.

Combat ensued with the Nightvale Spectre, which showed resistance to physical attacks and possessed powerful psychic abilities. Yomidrogo triggered wild magic, permanently shrinking by five inches, while casting sleep spells using twin spell metamagic. Bones wild shaped into a crocodile and attempted to grapple the creature. The spectre used its scythe's power to enter minds and deal both slashing and psychic damage. After a fierce battle involving coordinated attacks, moonbeam spells, and various magical abilities, Muscle the jackal delivered the killing blow by tearing apart the spectre.

The party looted the spectre's remains, finding a large scythe and valuable eyes for alchemical components. As they continued through the maze, the ceiling suddenly collapsed, creating a giant pit while a massive sandworm emerged from below with visible teeth. Cyrran managed to grab onto the side and rescue Muscle, while the party used their magic carpet to escape just in time. The pit was revealed to be about three hundred feet deep with a fork leading to where the sandworm had emerged.

The party continued forward and entered a circular stone chamber with a bench and no visible exit. Kailyn detected illusionary magic throughout the room, and Bones used mold earth on the wall behind the bench, discovering it was thin. When he put his hand through the wall, a bony hand grabbed him and tried to pull him through. After Kailyn fired fireballs into the portal to force the release, a skeletal figure emerged carrying a sword and shield, asking "Who challenges the sanctuary?"

The skeletal champion challenged the party to a battle of honor, explaining that victory would grant salvation while defeat would bring eternal damnation. Bones accepted the challenge, and they engaged in single combat. The champion used mirage step abilities to teleport and attack with mirage blade techniques. Bones fought back with spells including fireball with twin spell metamagic, and ultimately delivered the killing blow with fire damage. Before dying, the champion looked terrified and said "I see him, I'm sorry," suggesting he was bound to some greater power.

After examining the champion's body, Bones had a private moment where he realized something had loomed over the champion similar to what loomed over himself. The party discovered the champion's hidden room and found a +1 lance and armor. Yomidrogo used the recovered scythe to enter Bones' mind telepathically, where he saw Bones' memories and a small trapped entity that appeared distressed and told visitors to go away. When Bones violently rejected the mental intrusion, a physical fight broke out over the scythe, which became supernaturally cold and influenced both characters until Yomidrogo destroyed it with eldritch blasts.

The party moved through the champion's tomb chamber and discovered stairs leading down toward what Cyrran detected as a dragon's presence. They decided to take a long rest in the small antechamber, blocking the entrance with molded earth for safety. During the rest, Arri discovered her arm had turned blue with trembling fingers from nerve damage caused by a magical affliction that couldn't be cured. Yomidrogo and Arri had a private conversation about their concerns regarding Bones and the mysterious entity in his mind, debating whether Bones was good and feeding on something evil, or evil and feeding on something good.

After completing their long rest, the party prepared to face the ancient brass dragon in the chamber below. They discussed strategy and spell selections, with characters adjusting their magical preparations for the encounter. Bones consulted his talking skull about fighting the dragon and received a warning that the outcome leaned toward bad results. Despite the ominous portent, the party decided to proceed with their mission.

Kailyn approached the sleeping ancient brass dragon and attempted to negotiate telepathically. The dragon awakened and revealed they had killed his captive, not his champion, offering them a way out if they drank holy water from bowls by the door. The party members drank the magical water and gained temporary hit points, while the dragon revealed his name as Kalasia and spoke of capturing gods who had wronged him. The dragon then revealed he was known by another name - "The Mirage" - and was responsible for creating the illusion oasis the party had encountered.

The dragon recognized Yomidrogo and expressed deep hatred for elves, claiming responsibility for the massacre at Yomidrogo's village. When the dragon declared his intention to kill the party, combat began with initiative being rolled. Cyrran and Arri attacked first, with Cyrran shooting the dragon with his shortbow and Arri casting Sacred Flame spells. The dragon used lair actions to block the party's escape route with sand and breathed fire in a devastating line attack that severely damaged Arri while Cyrran avoided damage through evasion.

The battle intensified as Yomidrogo cast grease and attempted to ignite it, while Kailyn created a storm cloud with call lightning and struck the dragon with lightning bolts followed by thunderclap. Bones cast resistance on himself and wild shaped into a giant constrictor snake to grapple the dragon. The dragon proved to be an incredibly powerful opponent, using breath weapons, heat wave lair actions, and multiple attacks. Yomidrogo used his Deck of Many Things to create illusions including a beholder that successfully confused the dragon.

The dragon's devastating attacks continued as it dealt massive damage to party members. It brutally attacked Yomidrogo with its claws, dealing sixty-two points of damage and taunting him about hating elves and being right to kill his family and people. After dropping Yomidrogo and causing fall damage, the dragon cast scorching ray with three rays, dealing twenty points of damage total and killing Yomidrogo outright. The remaining party members continued fighting desperately as Kailyn fell unconscious from the dragon's attacks.

In a moment of desperation, as the dragon attacked Bones with multiple claw strikes, he instinctively grabbed the magical orb. The orb formed a protective guardian ward around him, though the dragon's attack broke through the shield. Despite the orb's healing effect keeping Bones alive, he fell unconscious and the orb fell to the ground. Dexter retrieved the orb but found it didn't respond to his touch, so he threw it to Cyrran with instructions to "save them all."

Kailyn regained consciousness and immediately attacked the dragon with a devastating moonbeam spell. Cyrran held the orb and asked for help, seeing it pulse with blue light. The orb randomly selected and cast modify memory on the dragon, making it forget why it had moved from its sleeping position and why it was fighting the party. The dragon became charmed and confused, unable to attack for one round. Arri picked up the unconscious Bones and carried him to safety while the party prepared for their final assault.

Kailyn cast a powerful tidal wave spell that severely damaged the dragon, dealing significant bludgeoning damage. She followed up with thunderclap, and the thunder-based cantrip created a loud, explosive sound that caused the dragon's head to explode, finally killing the ancient beast. The party searched through the dragon's treasure hoard and found three diamonds worth three hundred gold each. Using one of the diamonds, Arri cast revivify and successfully brought Yomidrogo back from the dead.

As Yomidrogo returned to life, he remembered that this dragon was one of two that had destroyed his homeland and killed his people. The party reflected on their hard-fought victory against the ancient brass dragon known as The Mirage, who had been responsible for the illusion oasis and the suffering of the trapped spirits. In a moment of healing and reflection, Yomidrogo recalled not just the trauma of the fire and burning, but also the aftermath when strangers had helped him with money and shelter, reminding him that perhaps the world wasn't entirely evil after all.
