Clouded Truths (Part IV)

The session began with Yomidrogo and Madame Tremzume discovering a wounded dwarven assassin in her chambers, his invisibility cloak unraveling after being struck by a thrown knife. The assassin bore a mysterious symbol on his chest and was dying from arterial wounds. Madame Tremzume revealed she could see beyond the normal realm and had detected his presence, leading to Yomidrogo demanding answers and threatening to take her to Port Wolifer for questioning.

Meanwhile, the rest of the party waited at Port Wolifer with Kiribos, where they encountered an aggressive Zilaphelian guard who initially tried to restrict their access to the area. Kiribos showed an official badge that granted them permission to remain, and they learned that their precious blue orb had been stolen. The party decided to use their rocs to fly and intercept Yomidrogo, with Kiribos revealing the orb was somewhere in the main kingdom.

During their aerial journey, Cyrran received a mysterious telepathic message stating "the time has come for a favour" and mentioning something about "Enter in the life finale." The party successfully reunited with Yomidrogo and Madame Tremzume on the ground, where they learned she had killed an invisible assassin and that a plague was affecting people in the city. Madame Tremzume contacted Darion telepathically to arrange a meeting.

The group decided to split up, with Cyrran and Bones heading to Black Wine Alley for a secret meeting while others went to meet Darion at the city walls. In Black Wine Alley, Bones disguised himself as an old halfling woman to spy while Cyrran met with Grephr, a half-orc leader of the criminal organization called the Ironclad. Grephr assigned them a smuggling job worth 100 platinum to transport a woman to Stonerane, and through magical investigation, they discovered the stolen orb was hidden on a ship called the Boreas.

When the party reconvened with Darion, Kiribos, and Madame Tremzume, tensions escalated as they confronted the alliance about their connections to Tassarion, the man responsible for massacring Yomidrogo's people. The interrogation revealed that while Darion and Kiribos claimed ignorance of the massacre, Madame Tremzume admitted she knew about it. The confrontation intensified when Bones used his psychic abilities to enter Madame Tremzume's mind, learning that she had been scrying on the party for days and that multiple empires were seeking the powerful orbs.

The situation took another turn when Zarabella revealed she had seen a purple orb with swirls being handed to Dahla, a hag living on an island. This revelation sparked immediate tension, with Yomidrogo punching Zarabella for withholding crucial information. The party realized they could potentially acquire two orbs - one from the ship and another from the hag's island.

After forming an uneasy alliance with Madame Tremzume's group and agreeing to hunt Tassarion together, the party sought refuge in Madame Tremzume's magically protected chambers. They disposed of the dead assassin's body, divided up treasure including 100 platinum pieces, and Kailyn won a magical ring that protected against tracking. During their rest, they took rotating watches and discussed their plans.

The next morning brought shocking news as they witnessed a public declaration of war in the Gilded Plaza. King Kaelen Rashir III of the Zilaphelian Kingdom officially declared war on the Veurim Empire, citing attacks on Port Wolifer and the use of forbidden magic in border conflicts. The announcement caused panic among citizens, many of whom immediately began fleeing the city.

Recognizing the urgency, the party flew their rocs to the harbor where they located the Boreas ship. Cyrran successfully infiltrated the vessel by posing as a police officer using an illusion of Kiribos's badge, deceiving the crew into leaving the deck. However, their search was interrupted when they encountered two drow assassins speaking in Undercommon in the ship's navigation room.

A fierce battle ensued aboard the Boreas, with Cyrran delivering a critical arrow shot that killed one drow instantly. The surviving assassin attempted to cast darkness but was countered by Yomidrogo's magic. Through a combination of psychic attacks, fire spells, and stunning strikes, the party overwhelmed their opponent. Before dying, the drow revealed the orb's location and spoke a final prayer in the Veurim language meaning "hush, blood is spilled."

The party successfully recovered their blue orb from barrels of fine magical glass powder and rescued Muscle, Bones' jackal companion, who had been put under a magical sleep by the assassins. They also discovered a halfling woman prisoner who was part of the smuggling operation. The ship's documents revealed a planned two-week journey with stops at multiple locations including the island where the hag Dahla resided.

As they prepared to commandeer the vessel, they met Curly, an experienced fish-like sailor who offered to help captain the ship. Despite some internal debate about following the Ironclad's orders versus pursuing their own agenda, the party ultimately decided to take the boat and visit the hag's island to acquire the second orb. The session concluded with a mysterious private conversation between Darion, Madame Tremzume, and Kiribos at the docks, which Bones overheard while disguised as a seagull, learning only the cryptic phrase "the only way this can end" before Darion returned looking agitated and upset.
