Session 28, Arc III
Clouded Truths (Part III)
Played 26 July 2025 Watch the session
The party found themselves on the edge between jungle and beach on Aywin Island when a blue orb of light appeared before Arri. This was a will-o-wisp, the same type of creature that had killed Fe in the sewers. Despite being immune to lightning and poison damage and resistant to many other types, the party managed to defeat it through coordinated attacks, with Yomidrogo delivering the killing blow using Eldritch Blast that caused the creature to crack and split open.
After the battle, Cyrran spotted about five more will-o-wisps emerging from nearby knolls, accompanied by a low, wet growling sound from the jungle depths. The will-o-wisps retreated upon hearing this ominous sound. Despite the obvious danger, Arri felt compelled to walk toward the jungle after failing a wisdom saving throw, and when Bones attempted to grapple her to stop her, she pushed him off and continued walking.
The party followed Arri deeper into the jungle where they encountered a terrifying aboleth - a floating creature with three vertically-aligned eyes, four tentacles, a gaping mouth, and scaly skin that reflected light. The creature had powerful charm abilities that made Arri feel a sense of home and peace, compelling her to touch its slimy but scaly skin. As combat began, three gnolls with carved-out, half-bubbled skin approached from behind, led by an alpha gnoll that cast a fear effect through terrifying roars.
The battle was intense and chaotic. Yomidrogo used twin-spell fireball to completely incinerate two gnolls, turning them to ash, while experiencing a wild magic surge that granted him temporary hit points. The aboleth proved extremely dangerous, using charm effects on both Arri and later Kailyn, making them see it as a friend and ally. It grappled party members with its long tentacles and used devastating abilities like dominate mind and consume memories.
During the fight, one of the gnolls transformed into a vampire gnoll by shedding its hyena skin, revealing a vampiric form underneath that could cause fear and drain life force. Bones used his mimic ability to recreate the gnoll's frightening scream, affecting multiple party members with fear. The aboleth's most devastating attack came when it used consume memories on Bones, reducing him to zero hit points and completely erasing all his memories.
The party eventually defeated both the enlarged aboleth and the vampire gnoll through coordinated attacks. Kailyn delivered the killing blow to the aboleth with call lightning for 41 points of damage, causing the creature to explode from the inside. After the battle, Cyrran discovered a white memory crystal inside the aboleth's heart that contained Bones' captured memories, while the creature's body parts slowly began moving back together.
With Bones having lost all his memories and not recognizing the party, they decided to seek help. Five elves emerged from the forest, initially defensive but not hostile. Among them was Zylbella, who recognized Yomidrogo as a childhood friend from their destroyed village of Nujlem. The elves were survivors from the village massacre who had been living on Aywin Island for 25 years, integrated with the indigenous elves after initially being met with reluctance.
The party traveled three hours across the island to reach the elven village of Lelse Thalas, where they met with Daleth, an elderly wood elf leader. Daleth was protective of elvish culture and wary of outsiders but agreed to help restore Bones' memories for one day only. She led Bones to a ritual chamber with a shallow pool surrounded by flowers to perform ancient memory restoration magic that was traditionally warned against.
The memory restoration ritual was dangerous and disturbing. Daleth had Bones lie in the pool with the crystal on his forehead, then held him underwater while telepathically demanding payment. During the drowning process, Bones saw Daleth with a different, more sinister form - arched back, blonde fingernails, messy hair, and green skin. He offered his loyalty and friendship with Yomidrogo as payment, and the ritual successfully restored his memories, though the party became suspicious that Daleth might be a hag who had made a deal involving souls.
While reuniting with Zylbella, Yomidrogo learned crucial information about their shared past. Zylbella revealed that Tassarion was alive and working with Madame Tremzume, and that Venzana, the elven traitor who had betrayed their village, had been tracked for six months before escaping with help from a large orc-like figure. She cast greater restoration on Yomidrogo, curing his wild magic surges and helping him remember his parents' names: Garrick Dorn and Naia Dorn.
The party's respite was short-lived when they looked out the window and saw flames and green storm clouds over the mainland. Arakcadia and Port Wolifer were under attack, with buildings on fire and destruction visible from the island. They immediately prepared to leave, using their magic carpet and rocs to fly toward the crisis, with Zylbella accompanying them back to the mainland.
Arriving at Arakcadia, they found the city under siege by four giant spiders with green scales and fangs matching the storm's coloring. The southwestern gate near the docks had been knocked down, buildings were in flames, and civilians were fleeing while guards fought from the walls with crossbows. The party engaged in aerial combat, with Yomidrogo casting sleep on two spiders and the group coordinating attacks from their flying mounts.
The spider battle was swift but intense. Cyrran delivered massive sneak attack damage with his crossbow, Arraphesu jumped onto a spider using stunning strike and flurry of blows, and Kailyn cast ice knife at third level. Cyrran delivered the killing blow to the large spider, piercing through it completely. During the battle, Yomidrogo spotted Darion among the guards and used message to communicate with him, receiving urgent instructions to get to Port Wolifer immediately.
The party retrieved their rocs Brad and Campbell, with Nillituh using speak with animals to convince the birds to carry them despite the chaos. Yomidrogo split off to head to the Raven Tower alone while the others flew to Port Wolifer. At the tower, Yomidrogo realized the magical defenses were too dangerous to overcome and instead headed to the Kamatel government complex.
Port Wolifer was devastated when the party arrived. They found destruction similar to Easthills with houses split in half, crumbling walls, and massive craters. Many people were dead or suffering from necrotic damage and bubbling skin from the gnawing plague, with guards executing infected civilians by slitting their throats. The party found Kiribos helping survivors in an alleyway, and he revealed crucial information about the conspiracy against them.
Kiribos explained that he and Darion had tried to stop the attack but failed, and that assassins had been sent after the party because they were getting too close to the truth. He confirmed that Reyvyre was Tassarion's last name and that Tassarion was a dragon. He urged the party to seek answers in the Zilaphelian Kingdom and revealed that Madame Tremzume had been trying to infiltrate Tassarion's operations but was taken by him through a portal at the ball.
Meanwhile, Yomidrogo infiltrated the empty Kamatel and found Madame Tremzume alone in her chambers looking out over the balcony. When he confronted her about the contract signed with Reyvyre, she denied working with Tassarion and claimed she wanted to save Arakcadia. She revealed that Darion had been her undercover field investigator and mentioned the name Tribicrin from his investigations. The tense confrontation culminated when Madame Tremzume threw a dagger at an invisible assassin, killing them instantly and revealing the hidden threat that had been spying on their conversation.
