Session 31, Arc IV

Dead Men Tell No Tales

Played 1 November 2025 Watch the session

The party continued their sea voyage aboard their ship, the Hornet, following a manifest that required stops at various ports. After reviewing their voyage plans, they discovered they were scheduled to pick up passengers in Alenez and cargo along the way, with the ultimate goal of delivering Yazana to Stonerane for payment. Their true objective remained reaching Droshdech to find another orb and clear Bones' death rune.

During their night voyage, they approached the elven village of Lelse Thalas as required by their manifest. Kiribos, their fish-like crew member, requested permission to spend time in the sea when they reached Alenez, sharing nostalgic memories of the place. Cyrran warned the party about avoiding Fjelon village due to disturbing childhood rumors of people going insane and committing violent acts.

Upon arriving at Lelse Thalas, the party disembarked to explore the small coastal settlement. They visited the local blacksmith where Cyrran attempted to upgrade his armor with spider chitin pieces, though the two-day process was too lengthy for their schedule. The party engaged in extensive shopping, with Cyrran ultimately purchasing a ring of protection and steel scale mail, along with enchanted piercing arrows. The prices for magical items proved steep, with staffs costing thousands of gold pieces.

Suspicions arose when Bones cast dispel magic and detected magical essence in Daleth's house, the village leader. Bones transformed into an ant and discovered hidden stairs leading to a secret basement containing a teleportation circle. He observed Daleth casting sickly green necromantic magic into the circle's runes, clearly preparing some dark ritual. The party decided to confront her, sneaking down into the hidden chamber.

The confrontation revealed Daleth's true nature as a hag. She transformed into an eight-foot tall creature with long fingernails, pale skin, and glowing eyes. Combat erupted as she attempted to charm the party with mass suggestion, but Yomidrogo successfully countered the spell. The hag grappled several party members and unleashed spectral claw attacks while her eyes darted between the teleportation runes and the party's belongings.

The battle intensified as Kailyn summoned lightning from storm clouds while Arri used her enhanced speed to land devastating martial arts strikes, successfully stunning the hag. Bones disrupted the teleportation circle with earth magic and hexed the creature, while Cyrran delivered precise sneak attacks. Yomidrogo unleashed powerful lightning bolts that severely wounded the hag. Realizing her defeat was imminent and her escape route compromised, the hag teleported away to safety.

Frustrated by the expensive magical items and their encounter with the hag, the party decided to rob the blacksmith shop. Yomidrogo created a fog cloud to obscure their theft while blinding and deafening the shopkeeper. They stole valuable magical items worth thousands of gold but left the man's personal money untouched. To cover their escape, they disguised themselves as Veurim soldiers and fled back to their ship.

The party revealed the truth about Daleth to Zarbella using Bones' scythe to share memories of the hag encounter. They discovered that Daleth had been making deals with villagers, removing their memories in exchange for protection and survival skills. Zarbella realized her own memories had been manipulated and agreed to help the party seek justice and answers.

During their continued voyage, Bones made a terrible mistake by testing a cursed staff with a skull on a seagull. The staff possessed him, connecting him to powerful supernatural entities in a terrifying vision. He encountered a massive demonic being threatening to use his skin and bones for decoration, his familiar entity offering protection in exchange for allegiance, and a mysterious cloaked figure warning him to make the right choice. Bones pledged allegiance to his entity and received instructions to find magical orbs, with visions of a jungle temple where hearts were being ritually removed.

When Bones awakened, he was terrified and unable to speak clearly about his experience. The party restrained him and eventually used suggestion magic to force him to explain, but he could only speak in Infernal due to the supernatural restrictions placed upon him. They managed to understand fragments mentioning gratitude, debt, protection, and someone who didn't understand what was happening.

During the night watch, Cyrran spotted a dark ship following them with no lights. Curly identified it as a ghost ship that hunted using heat detection, prompting emergency preparations. The party extinguished all lights, retreated to the lower decks, and prepared defensive measures including fog clouds and water barriers. Despite their stealth attempts, the ghost ship closed in for an attack.

The naval battle erupted as the ghost ship rammed into their vessel, causing significant structural damage and allowing skeleton warriors to board. The party positioned themselves strategically across their ship's decks, with some manning cannons while others prepared for close combat. Brad and Campbell, their roc companions, engaged in aerial attacks while the party unleashed devastating magical assaults.

The skeleton lord commanding the undead forces proved exceptionally dangerous, possessing party members and forcing them to attack their allies. Cyrran, Yomidrogo, and Kailyn all fell under the creature's control at various points, turning their own abilities against the party. The battle reached its climax when the skeleton lord's fell necromancy nearly killed Arri, but the protective orb saved her life.

As the fight continued, more party members became possessed and the situation grew desperate. A cannon malfunction severely injured Dexter, while the skeleton lord continued his devastating necromantic attacks. Bones was knocked unconscious by massive necrotic damage, and the possessed party members wreaked havoc on their own allies.

The tide finally turned when Arri awakened and delivered a series of martial arts strikes that reduced the skeleton lord to near death. Brad delivered the killing blow, tearing the undead commander apart and ending the supernatural threat. The ghost ship retreated into the distance, where Yomidrogo destroyed it with magical fire.

Victory came at a terrible cost. The party members who had been possessed or killed during the battle discovered they were cursed with a horrifying transformation. Their skin began melting away to reveal bone underneath, and they developed the same sunken eyes as the creatures they had fought. A growing mental haze threatened to worsen over time, slowly turning them into the same type of undead that had attacked them.

Faced with this dire situation, the party sought solutions for their curse. They learned they needed greater restoration magic, which none of them could provide. Curly mentioned knowing a cleric in western Droshdech who had fled there when magic was persecuted, offering their only hope for a cure. Bones raised a new skeleton companion named Tibia from the defeated enemies, while the party prepared to rest and identify their stolen magical items.

As the session concluded, Bones received an ominous warning from his supernatural entity, hearing the words "this changes nothing" as he drifted off to sleep. The party faced an uncertain future, slowly transforming into undead creatures while racing against time to find a cure for their curse and continue their quest for the magical orbs that seemed central to the growing supernatural threat.
