Session 6, Arc I

The Winds of Loss

Played 10 July 2025 Watch the session (spoiler-free)

The party found themselves in a tense confrontation with five goblins in their fortified keep, having been spotted as unwelcome outsiders. Bones cleverly used his mimicry abilities to speak in a goblin voice, attempting to de-escalate the situation by telling them to lay down their weapons and that they weren't there for the moonshine. His performance was convincing enough that the goblin leader became less tense, though he remained cautious and intimidated. The other party members - Crezzida, Kailyn, and Nillituh - wisely backed away and showed non-threatening gestures, with Nillituh even putting down his short swords as a sign of peace. Yomidrogo cast a blessing spell on Bones, Fe, and Kailyn to help them in case things went poorly.

The goblin leader ultimately ordered the party to come with them for questioning, and the goblins formed a circle around them, escorting them deeper into the keep. They were brought to a larger hut made of straw, sticks, bushes, and bones, where they could see pikes with skulls around the edges of the settlement. The party was left in a dark hut with four goblin guards watching them, and when they attempted to communicate, one guard told them they must wait for their leader.

When the goblin leader returned, he performed a mysterious and unsettling ritual. Sitting cross-legged in front of Nillituh, the leader began chanting in an unknown, guttural language while wearing distinctive armor with spikes and having dark hair streaked with green. Despite multiple party members attempting to identify the magic through arcana checks, none could understand what was happening. The leader proceeded to probe each party member's mind, dealing psychic damage as he searched through their memories. When he attempted to probe Bones' mind, however, he encountered only static and recoiled in confusion and intimidation, showing sudden respect for the skeleton.

After casting a detect magic spell with his eyes flaring bright green, the goblin leader declared the party could go, saying they had no business with them. The party took the opportunity to ask about water contamination, and the goblins mentioned "weird water upstream" that was salty and could "make zombies push back." After giving the goblins five gold pieces for information, they were directed to go upstream to investigate the strange water. The party bowed respectfully to the leader and left the keep, observing moonshine bottles scattered outside where the goblins had been experimenting with various alcohol mixtures.

Following the stream with excellent survival skills, Fe and Yomidrogo led the party to discover ancient ruins from the Zilaphelian civilization. Yomidrogo recognized these as remnants of an empire that had stood for a thousand years before being destroyed in a bloody war 200 years ago. The ruins consisted of stone structures, moss-covered slabs, and the sheared-off bases of once-mighty towers scattered throughout the forested area.

As they approached a mysterious circular structure with ornate decorations, the party noticed something strange happening to sound itself. The echoes of their footsteps and voices became increasingly delayed, reaching up to five seconds near the structure. Fe recognized the design as resembling ancient Fae bridges from her childhood, and when she cast detect magic, she discovered old conjuration magic with an ancient signature. The orb in Crezzida's pocket notably maintained its normal pulsating rhythm despite the temporal distortions affecting all other sounds.

Voices began whispering on the wind, speaking single words like "fear," "secret," and "sacrifice." The party discovered they were standing at the edge of a deep, dangerous river with jagged rocks below, where an ancient bridge had once stood. Understanding that sacrifices were required, Crezzida removed her hood - described as "the biggest thing about her" - and threw it into the river, feeling exposed as her curly hair and horn stubs became visible. Fe followed by sacrificing a shell necklace, and after Yomidrogo's initial attempt with a small cut proved insufficient, he threw a blue metal pocket watch given to him by Marcus and Athena into the waters.

With the sacrifices complete, a bridge materialized across the river, and the party crossed safely to the other side where the biome dramatically changed from forest to tundra. Crezzida experienced a panic attack after crossing but recovered with the help of the orb, which synchronized with her breathing and heartbeat to provide comfort. Fe celebrated their successful crossing by performing a backflip.

On the other side, Crezzida spotted humanoid figures in the river with her keen perception. As they approached, they discovered a settlement of fish people - tall humanoids with gills on their necks and dorsal fins on their heads and shoulders. These Sahuagin appeared defensive and didn't respond to attempts at communication in common languages. However, Bones was able to reach them telepathically, learning that they understood at least one language and were thinking about protecting something important, having suffered losses they "cannot afford again."

The party observed that these fish people appeared sickly, lethargic, and hunched over. Through investigation, they discovered particulate matter in the water and learned through telepathy that the fish people had lost young members of their community. When Bones cast speak with animals to communicate with local birds, they learned that something had been trapped across the river and protected for weeks. A taller fish person wearing armor eventually emerged and warned the party to stay away from their area, but suggested investigating nearby ruins for clues.

Crossing the river again, the party discovered the tragic sight of dead young fish people behind the settlement before approaching ancient ruins featuring broken pillars and a spiral staircase leading down into darkness. The fish people at the ruins watched but didn't interfere as the party descended into what proved to be a mysterious cave system. Inside, they found artificial rain falling from suspended clouds on the ceiling, which Kailyn recognized as weather magic from her homeland of Poseira.

As they followed a small stream deeper into the cave, with water reaching knee-high levels, Fe heard murmuring and talking ahead. The party attempted to move stealthily but failed, and Bones decided to scout ahead by transforming into a fly while invisible. Around the corner, he discovered more fish people wearing robes and carrying spears, who appeared to be holding something in the water below. However, one of the fish people detected him despite his invisibility and attacked, killing his fly form and forcing him back to his skeleton shape.

Bones cast hideous laughter on the fish person, causing it to fall prone and laugh uncontrollably, but the splash alerted the other Sahuagin and combat began. The party found themselves facing four hostile fish-like humanoids in the flooded cave. Nillituh attempted to communicate telepathically but received only threatening images in response, suggesting these creatures were different from the peaceful fish people they had encountered earlier.

The battle was intense and dangerous. Crezzida cast blade ward for protection and attacked with her crossbow, while Bones used moonbeam to engulf one enemy in ghostly white flames and stabbed another in the throat with his dagger. The Sahuagin proved to be formidable opponents with magical abilities - one successfully counterspelled Yomidrogo's inflict wounds spell, demonstrating they could speak languages the party understood. When a Sahuagin used a rod of retribution against Fe, the lightning damage spread through the water, dealing damage to all party members and dropping Fe to zero hit points.

During the combat, Kailyn made a crucial discovery. When she ducked underwater to investigate what the Sahuagin were guarding, she spotted a water elemental - a being made entirely of water that she recognized from her time in Poseira. Unlike the normal water elementals she had seen before, this one appeared subdued and motionless, lacking its usual tidal forces and vortexes. It seemed to be what the Sahuagin were protecting or controlling.

Meanwhile, Crezzida cast detect thoughts on Kailyn, probing deeper into her mind despite the psychic damage it caused both of them. Through this connection, she saw visions of Kailyn's underwater city of Poseira and gained understanding of the water elemental's location and significance. The party fought desperately, with Yomidrogo stabilizing the unconscious Fe with spare the dying and healing Crezzida with cure wounds. The battle turned when Yomidrogo killed one Sahuagin with a dramatic dagger throw to the throat, and Kailyn finished another with her scimitar, applying hex damage that killed it instantly.

As the combat neared its end, strange things began happening. The orb in Crezzida's pocket started pulsating more intensely, and Kailyn felt rumblings under the water along with a heartbeat in her mind. Most mysteriously, Crezzida's lingering detect thoughts magic connected through Kailyn's mind to a new target, and they heard a single word carried on the wind: "Help." The session ended on this dramatic cliffhanger, with the party realizing that whatever was trapped beneath the water - likely the subdued water elemental - was calling out for assistance, and their battle with the Sahuagin had been part of a larger mystery involving the contaminated waters and the tragic fate of the fish people's young.
