Weather Event, in Concepts
Qxi Librąven
Also known as Qui Liebrraven · The Global Storm
Qxi Librąven (pronounced "Qui Liebrraven") is a large, recurring storm that circulates the globe, moving in a southwestern to northeastern direction and falling over Canaan approximately once every two years. It is one of the most significant weather events in Canaanese life, particularly for communities in the west and south of the continent that bear the brunt of its initial landfall. The storm's regularity — predictable enough that settlements in its path have adapted their architecture and infrastructure around it — distinguishes it from ordinary catastrophic weather. It is a constant in Canaanese experience rather than an anomaly.
The Qxi Librąven makes its first landfall at Droshdech, the island nation off the western coast, which is the first land the storm reaches after crossing the ocean. Droshdech's built environment has been specifically designed with the Qxi Librąven in mind, making it one of the few communities in Canaan that has institutionalised storm survival as a first principle of settlement design.
Behaviour
The Qxi Librąven originates over the open ocean and moves in a southwest to northeast direction, building energy over ocean water and losing it progressively as it crosses land. When it reaches the coast of Canaan, it is at or near peak intensity. Its path takes it from the western coast northward and eastward across the continent, eventually reaching the Upper Basin in a severely diminished state before the storm system moves back over the Joale Ocean to the north, where it regains energy before beginning its next circuit.
The storm's approximate two-year cycle makes it predictable enough for agricultural, architectural, and civic planning. Its exact timing cannot be fixed far in advance, but in its final days the storm-readers of Droshdech can usually name the day it will make landfall.
The Qxi Librąven is often preceded by one or more precursor fronts: broad bands of dark cloud, heavy rain and wind that run ahead of the main storm, sometimes by weeks or months. Unlike the storm itself, which weakens as it crosses the continent, a front can sweep far inland across the Mediata Savannah with little warning, and at its worst can turn day almost to night for several days. Travellers caught in the open by one are advised to make camp and wait it out.
Affected regions and settlements
Droshdech
Droshdech is the settlement most directly and severely affected by the Qxi Librąven. As the storm's first landfall after crossing the western ocean, Droshdech receives the storm at or near its maximum intensity. The island's built environment has been specifically constructed with the Qxi Librąven in mind: buildings are low and anchored, settlements are positioned with storm drainage and shelter in mind, and the communities of Droshdech have developed extensive traditional knowledge about predicting the storm's arrival and managing its aftermath.
This adaptation is one of Droshdech's defining cultural characteristics, and the island's experience with the storm is significantly more significant than that of any mainland community.
Goulcrest
Goulcrest is the only other town to suffer severe damage from the Qxi Librąven.
The Upper Basin and Zilaphelian Kingdom
By the time the Qxi Librąven reaches the Upper Basin in the north, it is severely weakened, having lost energy crossing the land mass of the continent. The Upper Basin's protection by the Itumue Mountains contributes to further blocking what remains of the storm's force. The Zilaphelian Kingdom experiences elevated rainfall and winds during a Qxi Librąven event but not the dangerous conditions that the western coast faces.
Recovery and regain
After passing the Upper Basin, the storm passes back over the Joale Ocean, where it regains energy over open water before continuing its global circuit and eventually returning to begin the process again.
Significance
The Qxi Librąven is significant for several reasons beyond its immediate meteorological effects:
Droshdech's architecture and culture — The storm has directly shaped the built environment and cultural identity of the island nation. Droshdech's tradition of resilience, its low-and-anchored architecture, and its community storm-preparation knowledge are all consequences of centuries of Qxi Librąven exposure.
Regional travel disruption — A Qxi Librąven event makes overland and maritime travel in the storm's path dangerous. Communities in its way typically suspend non-essential travel during the storm and for a period of recovery afterward.
Historical and religious context — The storm has occurred throughout Canaanese history and appears in various religious and mythological contexts as an expression of the world's natural power.
