Itumue Mountains
Also known as The Itumue · Itumue Range · The Uncharted Mountains
The Itumue Mountains are the primary mountain range of Canaan, stretching along most of the continent's eastern side from the upper-north, where they curve to form the protective valley of the Upper Basin around the Zilaphelian Kingdom, southward along the eastern coastline until the mountains give way to rough, jagged, gravelly terrain in the south. They are among the most geographically significant features of the continent, forming a natural eastern boundary and creating the protected internal geography that has allowed the Zilaphelian Kingdom to develop its wealth and order in relative security.
The mountains are also among the most dangerous and least understood regions in Canaan. Travellers' accounts call the Itumue "the most dangerous part of the world." They are largely unmapped, and what knowledge exists of them comes primarily from rumour and old texts. The sparse population within the mountains consists of independent and often hostile communities operating in conditions of cold, difficult terrain, and extreme geographic hazard. Travellers who attempt the mountains face risk of avalanche, cold exposure, and becoming irreversibly lost.
Geography
Extent
The Itumue Mountains span most of the eastern side of Canaan. In the north, they curve westward to form the protective eastern and southern walls of the Upper Basin, providing the natural fortification that has made the Zilaphelian Kingdom's development possible. Further south, they continue along the eastern coastline, declining in height and transitioning to rough, gravelly terrain in the far south before their influence ends.
The mountains entirely close off the eastern side of the main continent, with nothing of note beyond the eastern coastline — except for pirate activity in the far south-east, where the mountains have receded and the coastline opens to the sea. The Itumue thus define not just Canaan's eastern geography but its accessible extent: beyond the mountains, the world is either ocean or unmapped.
Passes and access
No reliable safe pass through or around the mountains is documented in available maps. The lack of a safe mountain crossing below the Zilaphelian Kingdom is the reason that the Kingdom depends on sea transport to connect with the south of Canaan. In the east, the mines at the centre base of the mountains are accessible via main roads connecting to Arakcadia and its ports, but these roads skirt the mountains rather than crossing them.
Going around the mountains to the north is also dangerous, as the unmapped forest there presents hazards of its own. The mountains effectively block east-west movement across the centre and east of Canaan.
Shadowed Woods
At the base of the Itumue Mountains in the upper-east lies the Shadowed Woods, described as a section of the broader Enchanted Forests that has grown at the foot of the eastern range. The Shadowed Woods share the unusual and somewhat unsettling character associated with the other major forests of Canaan.
The mines
Along the centre area of the base of the Itumue Mountains lies the mines, a mining complex reached by roads running to Arakcadia and nearby ports.
Dangers
Travel in the Itumue Mountains involves risk of avalanche, cold exposure, and becoming permanently lost. These risks, combined with the presence of hostile communities and the lack of accurate maps, make the mountains one of the most dangerous parts of Canaan. Most documented hazards are environmental and human, though travellers' tales of stranger things in the high peaks are common and unverified, and the Shadowed Woods at the mountain's base carry the same unusual quality associated with the major forests of the continent.
Historical significance
The Itumue Mountains formed a passive backdrop to most of Canaanese history, serving primarily as a geographic boundary rather than a contested zone. Their protective role for the Upper Basin was decisive in allowing the Zawma Empire to develop in relative security during the Age of Peace and the Zilaphelian Kingdom to survive and prosper in the New Age.
