Settlement, in Places

Mjovadalr

Mjovadalr is the only well-known permanent settlement situated within the Itumue Mountains, located in the eastern high peaks of the mountain range. It is a Dragonborn-dominant community and stands in marked contrast to the rest of Canaanese settlement patterns, which have largely avoided the mountain interior due to the extreme conditions, the absence of safe passes, and the difficulty of supply. Mjovadalr's existence as a functioning community in one of the harshest inhabited environments on the continent is a testament to the Dragonborn population's particular physiological and cultural relationship with alpine conditions that most other races cannot endure.

The settlement is reached by a single named route, The Shadowed Passage, a mountain road that branches from the Bronze Track near the Xeamian Ruins and ascends through the peaks to reach the city. It is the furthest eastern settlement of any note on the continent and sits at the boundary of the Mediata Savannah side of the Itumue range and the rugged terrain of the Destitute Lands below.

Geography

Mjovadalr is positioned in the high peaks of the Itumue Mountains at an elevation that places it well above the foothills and far above any other named settlement on the continent. The mountain environment at this altitude is categorically different from the savannah and forested regions of lower Canaan: cloud cover is near-constant, precipitation falls as rain in warmer seasons and snow in colder ones, and temperatures during the frost season (Waring) regularly drop to −20 degrees or worse, with frostbite a genuine risk for unprotected non-Dragonborn visitors.

The high peaks provide views, on the rare clear days, that encompass an estimated 200 kilometres of coastline. These clear days are uncommon enough that they are marked communally by the settlement's inhabitants.

The town lies at the eastern edge of the central Itumue range, near the boundary with the terrain that descends toward the Destitute Lands. To the west, the mountains slope down toward the Mediata Savannah and the river systems that feed Arakcadia Bay. Dalthos' Peak — the highest point on the continent at 18 kilometres — is the defining summit visible from and above Mjovadalr.

Population

Mjovadalr is predominantly inhabited by Dragonborn, whose physiological characteristics make the mountain's extreme cold and altitude significantly more survivable than for most other races. While the settlement is not formally closed to other inhabitants, the conditions make sustained residence challenging for non-Dragonborn visitors, and the community's cultural identity is strongly shaped by its Dragonborn character.

The settlement attracts a small but consistent community of individuals who have come to the mountains for their own reasons: climbers and surveyors drawn by Dalthos' Peak, travellers seeking remote passage between the Mediata Savannah and the far eastern coast, and those seeking the relative isolation that the mountain interior provides.

Notable history

The most widely cited historical connection between Mjovadalr and the broader Canaanese world is the retirement of Lafaelyn, a Dwarven woman described as well past her 200th year at the time she made her record-setting ascent of Dalthos' Peak, reaching an altitude of 13 kilometres before turning back and descending safely. Following this achievement, Lafaelyn retired to Mjovadalr, making her connection to the settlement a point of some note in Arakcadian scholarly and social circles, where Dalthos' Peak's extremes are occasionally discussed as a subject of natural philosophy.

Relations with the Congress

Mjovadalr's standing with the Arakcadian Congress depends on who is asked. Some in Arakcadia count it among the Congress's independent allies, pointing to its long-standing trade and road arrangements with the lowland towns along the Bronze Track. Others, including many in Mjovadalr itself, regard the city as neutral, bound to no nation and owing nothing to the Congress beyond the courtesies of trade. Neither view has ever been settled by formal agreement.

Climate

Mjovadalr experiences some of the most severe weather conditions of any inhabited place in Canaan. The settlement sits in the high peaks zone where temperatures in the frost season (Waring) drop to −20 degrees or colder, all precipitation falls as snow, and clear days are rare enough to be considered significant events. During warmer seasons, the temperatures moderate but cloud cover and precipitation remain near-constant features of the environment. Mountain squalls — sudden, violent bursts of wind and precipitation arriving with minimal warning — are a recognised hazard throughout the year.

During the rare clear days, the iridescent cloud layer that protects Canaan from the radiation of the blue giant sun Cavlil is visible overhead in pale colour, a spectacle not typically visible from lower elevations where the layer presents as a subtle sheen rather than an overhead presence.

Access and transport

The sole named route connecting Mjovadalr to the broader continent is The Shadowed Passage, a mountain road that branches from the Bronze Track near the Xeamian Ruins and ascends through the peaks. The road is narrow, winds through the mountain terrain, and is subject to closure during severe weather, particularly during blizzards and the worst snowfall of the Waring season. The Bronze Track itself does not pass through Mjovadalr — the settlement is reached only by this branch road.

No sea access exists for Mjovadalr. It is a purely overland destination, which combined with the altitude and weather conditions makes it one of the most logistically difficult communities to supply on the continent.
