Geographical Feature, in Places
Dalthos' Peak
Dalthos' Peak is the highest point on the continent of Canaan, a summit in the Itumue Mountains that rises 18 kilometres into the sky — a height that places it far above the breathable atmosphere of the planet. No person has ever reached its summit. The mountain represents one of Canaan's most famous geographical extremes: a landmark visible from enormous distances, discussed in academic and social circles across the continent, and attempted by climbers who have never returned from the upper reaches and those who have turned back well below the limit of what the body can survive without extraordinary measures.
The town of Hapolstein is built on the foothills of Dalthos' Peak, and the mountain provides the defining geographical context for the river valley settlements below. Mjovadalr — the Dragonborn-dominant city in the mountains — lies nearby in the high peaks, and it is from Mjovadalr's community that the most significant attempts on the mountain's altitude record have historically come.
Dimensions and atmosphere
At 18 kilometres, Dalthos' Peak extends well above the breathable atmosphere of the planet. The significance of this is not merely a matter of cold and wind — it means that the upper portion of the mountain exists in conditions that are incompatible with unsupported survival for any known species. The practical consequence is that no summit attempt can be completed by any means currently available in Canaan, as the altitude record of 13 kilometres already represents a point far beyond comfortable survival for most beings.
Altitude record: Lafaelyn
The altitude record on Dalthos' Peak is 13 kilometres, set by Lafaelyn, a Dwarven climber described as well past her 200th year at the time of the ascent. At 13 kilometres — below the breathable limit but deep into the zone where survival requires exceptional physiological endurance — Lafaelyn turned around and made the descent successfully, the only individual documented to have reached such altitude on the mountain and returned.
The record and Lafaelyn's name are points of ongoing discussion in Arakcadian scholarly and social circles, where the mountain's conditions are occasionally taken up as a subject of natural philosophy. Following the record attempt, Lafaelyn retired to Mjovadalr, the Dragonborn-dominant city in the Itumue Mountains, where she has lived since. The Dragonborn of Mjovadalr are the people with the closest relationship to the mountain, and attempts at altitude records have historically come from individuals with Mjovadalr's community as a base.
The treacherous pass
A mountain pass cuts near the approach to Dalthos' Peak, described as treacherous — reflecting the general character of Itumue Mountain terrain, which offers no safe passage across the range and where navigation difficulties, avalanche risk, and the cold are perennial hazards. The pass is not a route across the range but rather a feature of the mountain's immediate approach, relevant to those travelling toward Hapolstein from the direction of the Bronze Track or attempting to reach the lower slopes.
Surrounding settlements
Hapolstein is the settlement on the foothills of Dalthos' Peak, positioned in the river valley at the mountain's base. The town sits in the catchment of the Enchanted Rivers system, which originates in the Itumue Mountains and flows through the central Canaanese river system toward Arakcadia Bay.
Mjovadalr lies in the high peaks nearby, accessible via The Shadowed Passage road branching from the Bronze Track. It is the primary human-scale base for any serious engagement with the mountain.
Location in the range
Dalthos' Peak sits in the central portion of the Itumue Mountains, at the boundary between the Upper Basin side of the range and the terrain that descends toward the Enchanted Rivers and the central Mediata Savannah. Its position between these two geographic systems — the enclosed northern basin and the open central river network — makes it a central point of the mountain range even as its height makes it unapproachable.
