Town, in Places

Valam

Valam is a town in the central lowlands of the Enchanted Rivers system, situated within the Xeamian Ruins in the Mediata Savannah region of Canaan. It is the only major surviving town from the Xeamian Empire, the south-central Canaanese empire that was destroyed in the Xeamian-Zawma Conflict (459--463 AP / 464 NA). Of the many settlements that once composed the Xeamian Empire, only Valam and the smaller town of Celrea survived the conflict's destruction in recognisable form. Valam is one of the settlements in the cluster of towns around the upper reaches of the Enchanted Rivers — alongside Shadowfeln, Arnelan, Hapolstein, Luna, and Celrea — and is a member settlement of the Arakcadian Congress.

Geography

Valam occupies a position in the central lowlands of the Enchanted Rivers system, in the river corridor country between Arakcadia Bay to the southwest and the Itumue Mountains foothills to the east. The town sits within the territory of the Xeamian Ruins — the scattered remnants of the former Xeamian Empire that spread across this section of the central Mediata Savannah.

The Enchanted Rivers, fed by the springs and snowmelt of the Itumue Mountains, flow through or near Valam as part of their broader course southwestward toward Arakcadia Bay. This river connection links Valam to the wider network of central Canaanese settlements. Hapolstein and Luna lie to the north near Dalthos' Peak, Shadowfeln occupies the mountain foothills to the northeast, Arnelan sits near Arnelan Lake in the transitional terrain, and Celrea lies to the south on the river system's southern approaches. Caifir Lla marks the point where the rivers meet the Enchanted Forests further downstream.

The Shadowed Passage — the mountain road ascending toward Mjovadalr — branches from the Bronze Track near the Xeamian Ruins, making the area around Valam a geographic reference point for navigation in central Canaan.

History

Valam was a settlement of the Xeamian Empire, the south-central Canaanese empire founded on ideals of freedom and self-thinking as the Age of Peace successor to the spirit of liberation that ended the Millenia of Darkness. When the Xeamian-Zawma Conflict (459--463 AP) brought the mutual destruction of the Xeamian and Zawma empires and ended the Age of Peace, the devastation was thorough — the vast majority of Xeamian settlements were destroyed. Valam survived as the only major town to emerge from the conflict intact enough to remain inhabited.

Why Valam survived where other Xeamian settlements did not remains a question historians still argue over. Its continued existence in the heart of the former empire's territory has made it the primary living connection to the Xeamian civilisation — a town that carries forward something of the empire that was otherwise reduced to ruins.

Government

Valam is a member settlement of the Arakcadian Congress. Like other members, it contributes civic levies toward shared Congress arrangements and sends delegates to the Congress Assembly in Arakcadia, while retaining its own internal governance and local administration.

Its relationship to the Arakcadian Congress is partly informed by Arakcadia's own ideological connection to the Xeamian Empire — the name "Arakcadia" derives from the Xeamian phrase "Arak-Kadia" ("harbour of return"), and the Congress regards itself as the political and ideological heir to the Xeamian legacy.
