Zawma Empire
Also known as The Zawma
The Zawma Empire was one of the two great empires of Canaan during the Age of Peace, occupying the north of the continent in the Upper Basin and protected by the Itumue Mountains. It was the political, cultural, and religious predecessor of the Zilaphelian Kingdom, which rose from its ruins following the Xeamian-Zawma Conflict and carries forward most of the Zawman ideals in recognisable form. The Zawma Empire was defined by its commitment to royalty, prosperity for all, and a guarded, religious society — values explicitly conceived as a defence against the chaos and suffering of the Millenia of Darkness.
Where the Xeamian Empire to the south drew on the legacy of liberation to build a politics of freedom and self-thinking, the Zawma Empire drew on the memory of the prosperous pre-Darkness era to build a politics of order, hierarchy, and religious sanction. This fundamental difference in political philosophy placed the two empires in growing tension throughout the Age of Peace, tension that eventually erupted in the Xeamian-Zawma Conflict.
Origins
The Zawma Empire grew during the Age of Peace (0 AP onward), in the northern territories of Canaan protected by the Itumue Mountains. Like the Xeamian Empire, it emerged from the reorganisation that followed the end of the Millenia of Darkness and the defeat of the overlords. But where the Xeamian tradition looked forward to a new politics of freedom, the Zawman tradition looked backward to what had existed before the Ancient Wars — a unified empire under a king, with peace maintained by hierarchy and religious order.
The Zawma Empire's founding ideology held that the era before the overlords, when a great empire ruled Canaan in peace, was the model for how society should be organised. Rather than the rebellious, freedom-centred politics of the south, the Zawma promoted the idea that restored royalty, religious sanctioned authority, and prosperity for all within a structured society was the right response to the suffering of the Darkness.
Character and values
The Zawma Empire was built on three core commitments: royalty, prosperity for all, and a guarded, religious society. These values are the direct antecedents of the Zilaphelian Kingdom's modern character. The empire was a monarchy, with religious authority — specifically Mahanity, with its theology of divine order under Moradin — providing legitimacy to royal rule.
"Guarded" in this context meant protective of its own values, suspicious of the ideals of change and self-thinking associated with the south, and cautious about outside influences. The Zawma Empire was not aggressively expansionist in the way the Veurim Empire later became, but it was deeply invested in maintaining its own social and religious order.
Downfall
The growing incompatibility between the Zawma and Xeamian empires produced escalating tensions through the later Age of Peace. By 456 AP, small conflicts had broken out along border territories. By 458 AP, trade had collapsed, with tariffs imposed on Xeamian goods that made trade impossible. In 459 AP, a Xeamian extremist group attacked an official Zawma ship, and the resulting conflict — the Xeamian-Zawma Conflict — consumed both empires over the following four years. Both empires destroyed themselves in the process, leaving only the villages and communities that had broken off or managed to survive independently.
Legacy
The Zilaphelian Kingdom is the Zawma Empire's direct successor state, having emerged from its ashes and carried forward its general ideals. The Kingdom's monarchy, Mahanity religion, social order, and geographic position in the Upper Basin all represent direct continuations of Zawman tradition.
Unlike the Xeamian Empire, whose legacy passed through the significant institutional transformation that produced the Arakcadian Congress, the Zawma's inheritance was relatively intact — the Zilaphelian Kingdom is a monarchy with the same values, and while the empire itself is gone, its successor closely resembles it in most respects.
Ruins of the Zawma Empire stand around Arakcadia and in the western Mediata Savannah, in what were once contested border zones and outlying Zawman territories.
