Spoken, in Languages

Zilaphelian

Zilaphelian is the principal language of the Zilaphelian Kingdom, spoken by the citizens of the kingdom and by the significant community of Zilaphelian-origin residents, merchants, scholars, and diplomats in Arakcadia. It is one of three recognised languages in Arakcadia — alongside Elvish and Dwarvish — that are accorded formal status without being official languages, reflecting their use by significant communities within the city and their importance in Arakcadia's diplomatic and commercial relationships.

The language occupies an important position in Arakcadia's linguistic ecology because of the Zilaphelian Kingdom's status as the city's most significant diplomatic and trade partner. Zilaphelian is spoken in the city's embassy quarter, in scholarly circles maintaining connections with northern intellectual traditions, by Zilaphelian merchants in the Docklands and Grand Bazaar, and by mixed Zilaphelian-Arakcadian households, particularly in the north-bank precincts.

History

The origins of Zilaphelian are traced by scholars at the Arakcadian Institute of Linguistic Studies to the cultural heritage of the Zawma Empire, which formed the historical foundation of what became the Zilaphelian Kingdom in the same way that the Xeamian Empire formed the foundation of the Arakcadian Congress. The language thus represents a parallel development to Common, with Zawman as its probable ancestor rather than the Xeamian trade language.

The Xeamian-Zawma Conflict and the collapse of the imperial systems did not destroy either language; both survived as the living languages of successor states and continue to exist as distinct national languages rather than merging into a single post-imperial tongue. The relationship between Common and Zilaphelian — both descended from imperial predecessors, both in contact through ongoing trade and diplomacy — has produced significant mutual borrowing, and scholars debate the extent to which the two languages are converging over time.

Geographic distribution

Zilaphelian is spoken primarily in the Zilaphelian Kingdom to the north of the Mediata Savannah. In Arakcadia, it is present as a recognised minority language among the city's Zilaphelian-origin population and among officials, scholars, and merchants maintaining connections with the Kingdom. The Arakcadian Institute of Linguistic Studies publishes standard Zilaphelian grammar and vocabulary guides for Arakcadian officials and for the diplomatic corps.

Outside the Kingdom and Arakcadia, Zilaphelian is encountered primarily through the kingdom's trade networks and diplomatic missions, which are present in most major settlements of the northern Mediata Savannah.
