Spoken, in Languages

Elvish

Elvish is the collective name for the language or family of closely related languages spoken by elven peoples across Canaan. It is a recognised language in Arakcadia, reflecting both the city's significant elven and half-elven population and its scholarly and diplomatic connections to elven communities. Elvish is spoken by elves in the Enchanted Forests, on island communities within Arakcadia Bay including Lelse Thalas, and among the elven scholarly, archival, and diplomatic population of Arakcadia itself.

The use of a single term Elvish to refer to the language reflects the Common-language convention adopted in Arakcadian civic and scholarly contexts. The Arakcadian Institute of Linguistic Studies has documented significant variation across elven communities, and scholars debate whether what is referred to as Elvish is better understood as a single language with dialects or as a family of related but distinct languages. For civic and diplomatic purposes, Arakcadia treats Elvish as a single recognised language.

History

Elvish is among the oldest documented languages in Canaan, with roots that precede the Age of Peace by a period that can only be partially recovered through linguistic analysis. Elven oral and written traditions preserve records that are significantly older than most surviving human-language documents, and the Arakcadian Institute of Linguistic Studies has made use of elven scholarly cooperation in reconstructing aspects of pre-Age of Peace Canaanese history.

The relationship between Elvish and the Uinheit religious tradition is noted in scholarly literature: some Arakcadian linguists have proposed that the name Uinheit may derive from a shared proto-language ancestor of both Mediatan and older elvish dialects, suggesting deep pre-historical contact between elvish and human-speaking communities in the Mediata Savannah and its margins.

Varieties

Elvish as spoken in Canaan varies significantly across communities:

  • Forest Elvish — spoken in the Enchanted Forests, where the largest continuous elven population maintains a living tradition. Considered the most conservative variety and closest to older forms of the language.
  • Island Elvish — spoken at Lelse Thalas and among coastal island elven communities. Influenced by maritime trade contact and interaction with other languages.
  • Arakcadian Elvish — the variety spoken by elves and half-elves resident in Arakcadia, adapted to the civic and scholarly environment of the city. More heavily influenced by Common and Mediatan than other varieties.

Role in Arakcadia

Elves in Arakcadia are prominent in scholarship, religion, diplomacy, and archives. The Great Library of Arakcadia employs elven archivists who work with the older historical collections, and the Arakcadian Institute of Linguistic Studies includes elven scholars in its documentation of both Elvish and the broader history of Canaanese languages.

Elvish in an Arakcadian civic context is most commonly encountered in the Great Library, in the religious spaces of the Temple District associated with Iride, and among the diplomatic staff of communities that communicate with elven governance structures.
