Spoken, in Languages

Common

Common is the continent-wide trade and administrative language of Canaan, spoken as a first or fluent second language by the majority of the continent's population and used as the principal medium of diplomacy, commerce, civic administration, education, and scholarly publication. It is one of the two official languages of Arakcadia — alongside Mediatan — and is the official language of the Arakcadian Congress for inter-settlement communication, formal records, and published civic documents.

Common functions as a lingua franca across Canaan: communities that speak Mediatan, Zilaphelian, Elvish, Dwarvish, or other languages can communicate with each other through Common, making it the linguistic foundation of Canaanese trade and politics. In Arakcadia itself, Common is the dominant language of civic life, education, and official publication, though Mediatan remains central to local cultural identity.

History

The origins of Common are associated with the period of the Xeamian Empire, whose trade networks created the practical conditions for a widely shared language. The Xeamian-Zawma Conflict and the establishment of the New Age order consolidated Common as the administrative language of successor states, since it already functioned as the working language of inter-regional trade and diplomacy.

Scholarly work at the Arakcadian Institute of Linguistic Studies has documented the linguistic heritage of Common and its relationship to Mediatan and other Canaanese languages. The precise genealogy of Common — whether it descends primarily from a Xeamian trade pidgin, from an older shared ancestor of multiple Canaanese languages, or from a deliberate standardisation effort during the New Age — is an active area of research.

Geographic distribution

Common is spoken as a first or functional language across all inhabited regions of Canaan. Its density of use is highest in trade cities, ports, and major roads, where inter-community communication is most frequent. Arakcadia and the Mediata Savannah are the cultural and administrative centre of Common-language use, and Arakcadian civic publications set the written standard for Common orthography and formal register.

In the Zilaphelian Kingdom, Common is spoken alongside Zilaphelian and Mediatan, with the relative weight depending on context. In the Veurim Empire, Common is understood in commercial and diplomatic contexts but less dominant in internal use. Among elven communities in the Enchanted Forests and on island settlements, Common co-exists with Elvish. Among dwarven communities associated with mining and construction, Common co-exists with Dwarvish.

Registers and varieties

Common in Arakcadia has developed distinct registers appropriate to different contexts. Civic Common — the formal register used in official documents, legal proceedings, and scholarly publications — is highly standardised and follows the norms set by the Arakcadian Royal Library Press. Commercial Common — used in trade, market interactions, and everyday negotiation — is somewhat less formal and admits more loan words from Mediatan and other languages. Street Common in the Docklands and Grand Bazaar incorporates vocabulary from Elvish, Dwarvish, and other languages encountered through trade.
