Mediata Savannah
The Mediata Savannah is the central region of Canaan and home to the largest concentration of towns, cities, and organised settlements on the continent. It occupies a vast expanse of grassland stretching across the middle of Canaan, bounded by Arakcadia Bay to the west, the Itumue Mountains to the east and north-east, the Enchanted Forests to the west and north-west, and transitioning into harsher terrain — the Destitute Lands and the fringes of the Veurim Empire — in the south. The region takes its name from the Mediatan people and language, which represent the oldest continuous cultural tradition of the savannah's human inhabitants.
The Mediata Savannah is dominated politically by the Arakcadian Congress, a civic commonwealth centred on Arakcadia, which coordinates trade, roads, education, diplomacy, and defence across most of the region's major settlements. It is the most densely inhabited part of Canaan and the principal corridor for overland and maritime commerce on the continent.
Etymology
The name Mediata is derived from the oldest known stratum of the Mediatan language, which has been spoken continuously in the central savannah since before the records of the Age of Peace. Arakcadian linguists at the Arakcadian Institute of Linguistic Studies have documented the term as related to a root meaning roughly "middle land" or "heartland," consistent with the savannah's central position in Canaan. The name is used both for the region and for the language and cultural identity of its longest-settled human communities.
Geography
Overview
The Mediata Savannah is defined by its grassland character: flat to gently rolling terrain, wide river corridors, and the great expanse of Arakcadia Bay cutting into its western side. The bay is the single most important geographical feature of the savannah, providing the maritime foundation for Arakcadia's trade empire and moderating the climate of the bay shore settlements significantly compared to the open grassland further inland.
The Bronze Track, the region's principal overland road, runs roughly north-south through the central savannah, connecting Arakcadia in the north-centre to Lyikdia in the south and branching at the Delilao Crossroads toward Easthills in the east and Port Wolifer on the bay. Smaller roads branch from the Bronze Track to other settlements, farms, river crossings, and mining operations.
Boundaries and borders
To the north-west, the savannah grades into the Enchanted Forests and the western coastal zones. To the east, the land rises toward the Itumue Mountains, with the foothills occupied by towns like Easthills and Shadowfeln. To the south, the savannah transitions into the less hospitable terrain of the Destitute Lands, with Lyikdia marking the last reliably civilised stopping point before this transition. The bay shore is fringed by wetlands, shallows, and occasional rocky outcroppings as one moves south and north from Arakcadia.
Several lakes and water bodies interrupt the grassland: the Dassea Shallows near Easthills, the bay itself, and various unnamed ponds and seasonal wetlands associated with the river system and the wet-season flooding.
Rivers and water
The savannah's river system is fed primarily by mountain runoff from the Itumue range and by the bay's influence on local hydrology. The Emerald River is the most important river of the central savannah, flowing through Arakcadia and into The Jade Oasis. Additional river systems supply water to farming communities across the region, and the seasonal flooding associated with the Poorneet rainy season is a defining feature of the landscape during the wet months.
Water access is a persistent logistical consideration for settlements away from the major rivers and the bay. Some towns, like Lyikdia, rely on water channelled from upstream settlements rather than sitting directly on a river.
Climate
The Mediata Savannah has a classic tropical savannah climate, defined by a pronounced wet-dry cycle. The seven seasons of the Canaanese calendar are most clearly experienced in the savannah, where the transition from dry golden grassland in Biderap and Garrawang to the green, rain-sodden landscape of Poorneet and Buath Gurru is dramatic and ecologically fundamental.
During Biderap (the dry season), the savannah turns golden, the grass dries to a crackle, and grass fires are common. Heat is intense, and water availability is reduced. The bay shore is somewhat more humid and tempered, but the open savannah can reach temperatures well in excess of 30 degrees.
Poorneet (the rainy season) brings heavy afternoon thunderstorms, torrential downpours, and flash flooding in low-lying areas. The savannah turns vivid green and wildflower cover is extensive. Rivers swell and some roads become impassable.
The transition seasons — Iuk (cooling), Waring (frost), Guling (warming), Buath Gurru (flowering), and Garrawang (gifting) — carry their own distinct characters, from the pleasant cool of Waring, considered by many savannah residents the finest travelling season, to the stormy build of Guling as the rains return.
The bay moderates temperatures on the Arakcadia shore. The Itumue foothills create higher rainfall in towns like Easthills and Shadowfeln, and the mountains themselves support conditions unlike anything in the open savannah.
History
The Mediata Savannah has been inhabited since the Era of Prosperity, and its history predates the surviving written record. The region formed part of the territory of the Xeamian Empire during the Age of Peace, with Arakcadia Bay providing the maritime infrastructure for Xeamian trade and expansion. The Mediatan language and cultural traditions are partly descended from this period.
The Xeamian-Zawma Conflict (459–463 AP) devastated the old imperial order and left the savannah politically fragmented. The surviving settlements reorganised in the early New Age, with Arakcadia emerging as the leading city and the Arakcadian Congress forming the principal political structure for the region. New settlements were founded across the savannah as the New Age stabilised, including Easthills and many of the smaller Congress-affiliated towns.
By 588 NA, the Mediata Savannah is the most administratively integrated and commercially active region of Canaan, though its southern and eastern margins — particularly near the Destitute Lands and the Veurim border — remain frontier zones.
Government and politics
The Mediata Savannah does not have a single government, but the Arakcadian Congress serves as its principal coordinating political institution. Most major settlements are Congress-aligned, meaning they participate in shared arrangements for roads, trade standards, education, diplomacy, and emergency defence while retaining their own local councils and laws.
Arakcadia itself, as the Congress's capital and largest city, exercises the most direct influence over the region's affairs. The Congress Assembly, which meets in Arakcadia, allows member towns to send delegates and participate in shared deliberation. Smaller frontier towns, including Lyikdia, have independent ally status rather than full membership, giving them access to Congress benefits without full obligation. Some also count remote Mjovadalr among the Congress's allies, though others regard it as neutral.
The Zilaphelian Kingdom to the north maintains alliance and trade ties with Arakcadia, and Zilaphelian interest in the northern approaches to the savannah is commercially and diplomatically significant. The Veurim Empire in the south is a source of ongoing tension, particularly for the southern frontier settlements.
Economy
The Mediata Savannah is the commercial heart of Canaan. Agricultural production — grain, livestock, fruit, vegetables, and speciality crops — feeds much of the continent and supports export trade through Arakcadia's harbour. The Bronze Track and bay shipping network connect the region's products to consumers across Canaan and beyond.
Arakcadia itself functions as a trade entrepôt, manufacturing centre for scholarly goods, and administrative hub. Other towns specialise in particular products: Lyikdia for cold-climate berries and frontier trade, Easthills for farming and Bronze Track supply services, Port Wolifer for bay shipping, and so on.
The savannah's wealth supports not only commerce but scholarship, publishing, cartography, and civic administration at a level not seen elsewhere in Canaan outside the Zilaphelian Kingdom.
