Eastgate
Eastgate is one of Arakcadia's city gates and an important eastern approach into the inner city. It marks the transition from the outer suburbs and the wider landscape of Greater Arakcadia into the older, denser stone fabric of Arakcadia proper. As one of the principal entry points for overland travellers arriving from the Bronze Track and the eastern roads, Eastgate is among the first parts of the city that most visitors encounter.
The district of Eastgate surrounds the gate itself and encompasses the zone where suburban approaches give way to city streets — an area shaped by the practical requirements of checking travellers, managing cart traffic, accommodating road trade, and receiving the daily flow of people, animals, and goods entering the city from the east.
The Gate
The Eastgate structure itself is a fortified city gate with warden posts, inspection points, and cart barriers. Wardens associated with the Office of Civic Peace check travellers arriving from the east, particularly those travelling with significant goods or without obvious local connection. The gate is not a significant barrier for ordinary foot travellers, but cart traffic is subject to more thorough inspection, particularly for goods subject to tariff or civic regulation.
The gate marks the civic boundary between Arakcadia proper — whose residents are entered in the civic roll and whose property is subject to Arakcadian civic law — and the outer suburbs and farms of Greater Arakcadia.
The District
Character and population
The Eastgate district's character is shaped by its function as a transit zone. Its resident population includes:
- Gate workers and wardens — civic officers employed at or near the gate.
- Cart families — households whose livelihoods are tied to the road trade, including carters, stable hands, harness makers, and cart repair specialists.
- Road traders — merchants who operate from fixed premises near the gate rather than in the main market districts further inside the city.
- Guards and escort workers — people providing paid escort or security services for caravans and travellers on the Bronze Track.
- Hostel keepers — inn and hostel operators serving travellers who arrive too late or too tired to seek more central accommodation.
- Congress residents — people from member settlements of the Arakcadian Congress who maintain an Arakcadia address for civic or commercial purposes.
Outer market
The area around Eastgate supports a substantial outer market serving travellers arriving and departing. Provisions, animal feed, travel supplies, and basic goods are sold in the market, which operates at different hours from the main city markets to accommodate the schedules of road traffic.
