Rivergate
Rivergate is a south-bank river district in Arakcadia with shops, taverns, apartments, wharves, and canal access. It is one of the primary lodging and transit areas for travellers entering the city by water or moving between districts, and it functions as a key node in the city's internal transport network. Its position on the southern bank of the Emerald River, with access to canal routes running through the district, makes it a practical stopping point for people arriving by ferry, water taxi, or canal boat rather than by road.
Rivergate is neither as prosperous as Silverleaf — the comfortable residential district to its east — nor as busy and dangerous as the Docklands to the west. It occupies the practical middle of the south bank's waterfront: a working transit district with enough comfort to serve as a base for longer stays, enough commerce to sustain a lively street economy, and enough river access to make it one of the points where Arakcadia's water-transport network is most visible.
Function
Rivergate's primary function is as a transit and lodging district. Travellers arriving in Arakcadia by river ferry or water taxi from other bay settlements, overland from the Bronze Track via river crossing, or by canal from other districts of the city are most likely to find their first accommodation in Rivergate or the adjacent southern wards. The district has a higher proportion of inns, lodging houses, and taverns relative to its permanent residential population than most other districts of the city.
River and canal access
The district's wharves provide access to the Emerald River ferry and water-taxi network. Regular water-taxi routes connect Rivergate to other south-bank districts and to north-bank crossings. Canal boats carrying goods from the Grand Bazaar or the Docklands pass through the district's canal system. For travellers unfamiliar with the city, Rivergate's river access points are the practical entry into Arakcadia's water-transport system.
Commerce and services
Rivergate's commercial character reflects its transit function. The district has a disproportionate number of:
- Inns and lodging houses — ranging from basic traveller accommodations to modest comfort establishments catering to Congress visitors and minor merchants.
- Taverns and eating houses — often open early for those arriving on morning water taxis.
- Money-changers and exchange agents — serving travellers converting foreign currency or Congress-member settlement scrip.
- Outfitter shops — selling travel supplies, rope, basic tools, and replacement clothing.
- Message and courier services — for travellers needing to contact civic offices or personal connections in the city.
Population
Rivergate's resident population is a mix of riverside families, tavern keepers, innkeepers, ferry operators, canal workers, water-taxi crews, minor merchants, and a high proportion of Congress residents from member settlements who maintain semi-permanent lodgings while spending significant time in the capital. The district's transient population — people staying for a few nights rather than residing permanently — is proportionally one of the highest in Arakcadia.
